Does anyone give IV narcotics / antiemetics in their Day surgery to postop pts, and what monitoring do they receive? Our Day surgery staff do not currently give IV meds, as they feel the pt would require to have oxygen saturation and monitored for HR and B/P continuously while receiving these IV meds.

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Org (JCAHO) has developed standards around IV analgesia & sedation.
The level of care must be equal, regardless of where the IV meds/sedation is given. "Pts are most at risk for residual sedation & cardioresp depression immediately after admission to the recovery area" (ASA, 2002). This reinforces the importance of our Phase I recovery areas for pt safety. Pt receiving IV analgesics are most appropriate for continuous monitoring in Phase I recovery areas with 2:1 Pt to Nurse ratios.
