Nurse Anaesthetists

Can you please advise me if there are any nurse anaesthetists practicing in Ontario and if so, where are they getting their education to do this?
Thanks

There is no "Nurse Anesthetists" currently practicing in Ontario, or in Canada. That is the model in the USA. However, there has been an initiative, recently begun by the Ontario Society of Anesthetists to implement an, "Anesthesia Care Team" model. This team is comprised of an Anesthetist, and one or more Anesthesia Assistants working with the Anesthetist. Other inclusions will be the Nurse Practitioner ~ Anesthesia, and all of these positions I will describe to you.

The Anesthesia Assistant: is an Respiratory Technologist, or a Registered Nurse who has taken the Anesth. Assistant course offered at the Michener Institute, Toronto. It is two years in total for the Advanced program, which includes clinical hours.

We have presentations on the ACT at the annual OPANA conference in October.

The Nurse Practitioner (formerly the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner) ~ Anesthesia, is an RN with a Master's Degree and an ACNP (now NP/EC) and the Anesthesia specialty. The first intake for this program occurs next month at U. of Toronto, and a subsequent one in September, 2008. However, the role of the NP Anesthesia is still up for discussion. The CAS feels strongly that the NP Anesthesia should remain in the PreAdmission Units performing preop consultations. The CNA, NAPAN and OPANA feel that this is the safest, most qualified professional for giving general anesthetics in the OR, and are recommending this rather than the AA.

Thank you for your enquiry,
OPANA

Hello,
As per the U of Toronto website, they will soon be offering a NP- Anesthesia care program possibly as soon as Jan. 2011. Do you have any information on the approximate salary of the specialists?
Thank you
