I am team leader in the Operating Room and we are having difficulty in the answer to the following question. Is it recommended that there be 2 nurses present at all times in pacu (phase1 )when recovering a patient or can 1 person be available but not staffed in pacu?

Looking at the OPANA and ASPAN standards provides the following information:
In phase I recovery, 2 RNs competent in Perianesthesia nursing are present and in the room at all times.
In phase II recovery 2 staff must be present, atleast one competent in Perianesthesia nursing.
Staffing ratios are in accordance to patient acuity and stability.
For example, in Phase I recovery:
1:1 nurse to pt ratio for pts on admission, requiring ventilatory support, have airway obstructions or surgical complications.
1:2 nurse to patient ratio with 2nd nurse to assist as needed for pts who have stabilized but require numerous nursing interventions
1:3 Nurse to patient ratio, with 2nd nurse to assist as needed for all conscious, stable pts.
