Staffing in PACU Weekends

Can you please tell me what type of RN coverage you have on the weekend in the PACU and if you have additional staff on call on the weekend.
Thanks

Results of a survey of 4 hospitals:
1) TWH, University Health Network, Toronto
1 RN 2330-0730 - Friday evening
1 RN 0730-1930 - Saturday and Sunday days
1 RN 1930-0730 - Saturday and Sunday nights
1 RN 1530-2330 - both Saturday and Sunday - overlap shift

2)Royal Vic, Barrie: 2 RN’s on call Friday (2000) to Monday am (0800) with a third on call as a second back up…so the first two RN’s would be called in if the OR takes a case…then they would notify the third RN that they are going in…this provides a ‘heads up’ for that third RN to be prepared to go when called

3) Mt Sinai, Toronto: We have one prescheduled 8 hour shift, from 1200 - 2000 hours. We have one other person on first call from 2000 - 0800 hours Sat and Sun nights, and a second call person on call from Sat 0800 hours until Monday a.m. 0700 hours (when the day staff arrives). Friday evening/night is treated like the other 4 nights of the week: Monday to Thursday, the evening staff rotate through first and second call, from 2300 - 0700 hours (when the day staff arrives) except Friday night they are on call until 0800 hours Sat. a.m. (when the one RN working at 1200 hours Sat, is on first call until she begins her shift at 1200 hours).

However, the on-call/call back has doubled over the past year, and we are considering a permanent night shift at least for Monday to Friday. Then on call will start Saturday a.m. at 0800.

4) Trillium Health Centre: 2 RN mon-fri night shift
2 RN 12 hr day sat & sun
1 RN 12 hr night sat & sun + 1 four hr eve RN (1900-2300)

At Sunnybrook we have 2 RNs in PACU on all shifts on the weekend. Every other Friday night we have 3 on shift. We are looking into a call schedule for weekend shifts due to high volume of pts and acuity.
